With little of substance to grip on to, there was no call for a heavily significant musical performance and Hartmut Haenchen thankfully leant towards the other end of the spectrum. His Wagner conducting was plausibly Germanic in sound quality, but playful, light on its feet, not intelectually weighty. This left the audience enough mental capacity to enjoy the production's technical tricks.
