Musically this was an unusually sensitive Frau.
Hartmut Haenchen avoided the dense, ear-wearying volume one often encounters in this piece. Even the tremendous orchestral climaxes in the final act sang, additional brass players high in the auditorium giving a trilling lift to the sound. Perhaps accasional tempo was a bit deliberate, but any reservations were swept away by this conductor’s deep empathy with the score and the magnificent playing he secured from all sections of the Netherlands Philharmonic.
