...This Parsifal is certainly void of the glaze and stasis that characterize the more traditional esoteric, quasi-religious approach, and this sense was mirrored in the superb conducting of Hartmut Haenchen. He led the Royal Opera Orchestra to new heights, creating shimmering colours and nuanced, impressively differentiated drama. His choice of tempi, informed by an intimate knowledge of the performance history and Wagner’s own remarks and indications, is highly assured and creates an irresistible momentum.
