Hartmut Haenchen proved again that few conductors come near to his accomplishment with Wagner. All the lines emerged with chamber music-like eloquence. Not for a moment were the singers overwhelmed. Avoiding mere bombast or busyness, Haenchen's pacing seems absolutely naturel and emphasizes the humanistic aspects of the score.
