Great performances...

This is a tremendous performance by Haenchen and La Monnaie Symphony orchestra, quite as good as Abbado's version. In fact the movement timings are almost identical, the differences in interpretation being fairly minor. Haenchen plays the adagio third, which I prefer.

I am not surprised how good this is, given this conductor's dvd of the Mozart Jupiter Symphony/Piano Conc. #20. I just didn't know how adept he was with Mahler. More from this combo would be very welcome, considering they have done or are doing a complete Mahler cycle. A huge orchestra is needed for the #6, and it was interesting to see the players packed like sardines onto the stage! The video is good, but has too many long shots, and not enough of the conductor, who is worth watching. ...
So, performance-wise, Abbado and Haenchen are tied...
