Opera, 01. December 1995
The first performance on December I was of exceptional musical accomplishment. Again, seriousness prevailed, but Hartmut Haenchen paced the perilous score with total naturalness. This was probably his finest Mozart in Amsterdam to date, the broader pieces never drifting, the quick sections never driven. His careful study of the manuscript had resulted in many refreshing breaks from tradition. There was even a cadenza for the Tree Lady which Mozart hard deleted. The Nederlands Kamerorkest played with fine balance and lively articulation, in perfect ensemble with a splendid cast.
