(...) The musicality of it was of one mind and exceptional. The conducting of Hartmut Haenchen was admirably authentic, placing the emphasis on natural declamation and reinvoking a presumed ancient ideal in wedding dance and music. Under his leadership, the Los Angeles Opera orchestra sounded pristine, and Haenchen looked to be capturing every note they produced, much as a sorcerer catches souls. He also balanced the buoyant overture, which is influenced by the Enlightenment, against the soul of the piece, which looks back to the Baroque, with confidence, almost accidentally revealing its score to advance opera by individualizing characterizations, despite its intent to return to the art’s serious roots, thus underlining the irony of Gluck composing an opera that looked forward, rather than backward, as intended. Haenchen succeeded with all the instruments at his disposal, synchronizing voice an orchestra superlatively.

Hartmut Haenchen conducted the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, and here was a highlight of the evening. The overture sounded crisp, energetic, poised. Accompagniment was supportive, phrasing elegant.

Musically, this "Orfeo" is very well done (...) Much of the succes of the performance was surely due to the conductor, Hartmut Haenchen, who treated the orchestsra like a period-instrument band yet still got a rich sound from it. With pit raised so the players were nearly at stage level, the blend of orchestra and voices, at least from a seat in the orchestra section, was just about ideal. Ideal too was Haenchen's ability to maintain propulsive tempos without any loss of expressivity.

The orchestra, lead by Hartmut Haenchen, followed the dramatic development with suppleness and using a soft sound idiom, never interferred with the development of the story; especially the application of the dynamics and the phrasing showed an accurate and attentive spirit.

That music, conducted by Baroque specialist Hartmut Haenchen, is a wonderful work of lightness, of delicacy, never overpowering, never uselessly ornamental, always moving the passions and the action forward. Such simplicity requires great skill to maintain, and Haenchen is a master of that skill.
