Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice: which recording should you buy?

His Orpheus is Jochen Kowalski, whose countertenor in the 1980s was nonpareil in its resonance and almostfeminine sensuousness. Kowalski is especially impressive in his scene with the Furies, building the intensity gradually to a searing final plea. The boy singing Cupid sings brightly and neatly, but characterises blankly, while Dagmar SchellenbergerErnst’s Eurydice is long on indignation, short on tenderness.
