Haenchen’s is an interpretation for the 21st century, using in scrupulous detail the multitude of hints about dynamics, balance, instrumentation (especially of percussion and sound effects) contained in the very recent New Critical Editions of the score. He eschews late-Romantic bombast in favour of a sound world and balance familiar from Mendelssohn’s fairy-tale music and Liszt’s tone-poems –
a real alternative to other versions. Dutch veterans Bröcheler and Henk Smit (Alberich), their successors for CD Albert Dohmen and Günter von Kannen, the ubiquitous Graham Clark (Mime), a mature but still stylish and alive Jeannette Altmeyer (Brünnhilde on DVD), Stig Andersen’s smart, youthful Siegfrieds (CD) and Anne Gjevang as Erda and a Waltraute that for understanding of the role you’d want on a desert island, are the picks of a fine bunch. The later CDs predictably find Haenchen and his two orchestras giving more
dramatic and spontaneous performances, but the DVDs should be seen for the freshness of Audi’s theatrical thinking, and his reinvention of 'deconstructionist' effects."

In deze laatste 'Götterdämmerung' overstegen de musici onder leiding van Hartmut Haenchen zelfs dit
onvoorstelbaar hoge niveau.
De musici betuigden hun respect en dank aan de Duits/Nederlandse maestro door aan het begin van de derde akte op het teken van de dirigent niet op te staan; de musici bleven zitten om samen met de volgepakte zaal te applaudisseren en te stampvoeten voor Haenchen. Een ontroerend moment voor de bijna 71-jarige dirigent, die in al die jaren geen voorstelling van de meer dan honderd heeft gemist.
Op zijn beurt liet Haenchen bij het slotapplaus het hele orkest op de bühne komen, waar het hartstochtelijk en langdurig werd toegejuicht door een dolenthousiast publiek.
En toen verscheen regisseur Pierre Audi met microfoon voor het publiek en maande iedereen tot stilte. Hij memoreerde het groot aantal mensen dat aan het succes van deze 'Ring' had bijgedragen. En hij bedankte iedereen in de persoon van Hartmut Haenchen. De dirigent kreeg uit handen van Audi het originele ontwerp van de opvallende kubusring, ontworpen door de inmiddels overleden Eiko Ishioka.
Het was een mooie geste dat De Nederlandse Opera het einde van de 'Ring' op deze manier extra glans gaf. ...
Mooi dat Nederland maar geen afscheid wil en kan nemen van deze unieke enscenering.
