Not only theatrically was this the most involving Elektra I have seen to date, but musically it was also the most appealing. What a splendid film this production would make! Hartmut Haenchen projected the emotional aspects of the score and suppressed the decibels, even at the most thickly orchestrated moments; the singers could sing and were not forced to wage combat with the pit. The Netherlands Philharmonic played with exceptionally poetic blending lines.
