The Haenchen is not only as good or better than the Segerstam, it is also more intelligently and conveniently coupled with a wonderful performance of the only other quartet Mahler arranged for string orchestra, Schubert's Death and the Maiden. Sonics are excellent, and the superb string band plays with dead-center tuning. Their spit-and-polish virtuosity in the last few moments of the Schubert is astounding!

Wie aus einem Guß spielten die bestens disponierten Musiker schon in der Mahler-Bearbeitung des f-moll-Streichquartetts Op. 95, formten bei schlanker Tongebung transparent und mit ausgeprägtem Gefühl für harmonische Abläufe. Gleiches galt für die Interpretation von Beethovens vierter Sinfonie, die jeden Zweifel an der Berechtigung einer solch kleinen Besetzung ausräumte.
