Pressestimmen

Excellent period-aware performances on modern instruments
This is a totally enjoyable concert of mostly major works by Mozart. The recording was made in 2005 in the Berlin Konzerthaus. The Kammerorchester CPE Bach is an excellent group of musicians and Haenchen is a very experienced conductor at this repertoire. Stefan Vladar is a fine pianist who first came to fame at the age of 20 when he won 1st prize at the Vienna Beethoven Competition.

The first item is an early work by Mozart, a divertimento written when only 15 years old. Others would be happy to write it at any age! This is followed by the popular 20th Piano Concerto which is given a sensitive but dramatic reading where a forward pulse is maintained with a strong underlying rhythmical control. Although playing on modern instruments, the balance between the piano and the reduced orchestra is about perfect with every detail clearly audible. There is a strong rapport maintained between the players and the conductor throughout.

The final item is a strong performance of the Jupiter Symphony which shares all the drive, forward momentum and clarity that informs the previous items. It would be possible to imagine a gentler approach to this symphony but this remains a fine interpretation that builds impressively and excitingly to the final peroration with an appropriate blaze of splendour.

The imaging is crisp, detailed and well-lit. There is a nice blend of close and more distant shots. The sound is very good indeed with plenty of clarity without exaggeration or spotlighting. It is presented in DD5.1, DST 5.1 and stereo.

This is a period-aware set of performances but played on modern instruments with an orchestra reduced to an appropriate size. In my opinion it is worth 5 stars and should give much satisfaction to all purchasers except those who particularly favour very romantic interpretations of this repertoire.

Luminous Mozart
My first order of this DVD from the UK never reached me. Then I ordered it from classical_music_superstore and received it a few days later. It was well worth the wait. I had been only vaguely familiar with Hartmut Haenchen and his magnificent Kammerorchester C.Ph.E. Bach before, nor was the pianist Stefan Vladar a household name. When I first played this disk (in outstanding audio and video), I was in for an exquisite treat, and it gets better upon each hearing. Haenchen is a first-rank musician, and so are his group of soloists. They are playing like angels, in effortless collaboration and all standing up. This ca. 30-members orchestra is among the most transparent and, at the same time, most spirited, refined and powerful Mozart ensembles I have heard. The Divertimento K. 113 sets the tone, lightweight as it may be. In the D minor concerto, Vladar shows amazing virtuosity and sensitivity to Mozart's style. He plays wonderful embellishments and often follows the orchestral tutti. I can not find more superlatives for this performance, likewise for the brilliant and luminous Jupiter Symphony. Just listen and see, you will be bowled over.

excellent perfomances of all three works

All three works on this DVD feature masterful interpretations of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony, 20th piano concerto and divertimiento k.113. The lighting, film quality and sound mastering are all excellent. You feel a richness of timbre that makes one feel as if one is at the concert.

Particularly excellent is the performance of Mozart's brilliant, mysterious, non-linear, psychedelic and nearly incomprehensible Piano Concerto no.20. Stefan Vladar plays a brilliant, energetic, nuanced interpretation of the piano part and hits the complex dynamics of the piece at the proper moments. He plays on a well-tuned concert grand Steinway piano with a fine sound that is well microphoned. You feel the energy of the music, and above all you feel how Mozart takes the listener into sprawling directions of tone, as if the music has a weird fractal energy, like a roller-coaster of notes that leads into weird melodic permutations, then changes direction and cascades into somewhere else. The concerto is music from another planet. It is conceptually non-linear and seems to defy definitive interpretation.

The Essential Mozart , Euroarts

An All-Mozart Programme conducted by Hartmut Haenchen
- In the present performance, Haenchen and a reduced ensemble succeed in bringing to life the music's manifold characteristics through the translucency of the part-writing. Whether light-heartedness, songlike lyricism, drama or inspired polyphonic writing: everything breathes the spirit of Mozart
- Time and again, critics have praised the orchestra's stylistic assurance, transparent textures and technical precision
- Hartmut Haenchen is a man of considerable gravitas, now in his sixties this is an artist to be rediscovered, a highly dedicated artist with a breadth of experience who exudes warmth and charm
- Stefan Vladar's extraordinarily sensitive touch and stylistic assurance make him an ideal partner for Haenchen and his orchestra
- Vladar was only twenty when, as the youngest of 140 participants, he won the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna
- Brand new recording - state-of-the-art quality
